In the past, when detaching the gingival fibers from a tooth root in preparation for an extraction, I used a standard periosteal elevator. Many times, this resulted in tearing the gingival tissue as well as adverse forces on my wrist. From his clinical experience, Dr. Britt suggested that i try the DIS microserrated periotome. What an improvement! Not only is the blade thinner but the edges are microserrated which cuts thru the gingival fibers much more easily without tearing the gum tissue and much less strain on my wrist.
